Sonsbeek 2001/Sonsbeek 9: Locus Focus
2 July – 29 August 2001, Park Sonsbeek and other locations, Arnhem
Inleiding
At Sonsbeek 9, under the title Locus Focus, Belgian curator Jan Hoet focused on three distinct locations in Arnhem, each with its own character: Park Sonsbeek as a cultural site, the Eusebius Church as a historical landmark, and the Kronenburg shopping center as a socio-economic environment. Unlike previous editions, in which artworks were sometimes scattered throughout the city, Hoet opted for a clear and legible layout, inspired by the Sonsbeek tradition and with a nod to the influence of Wim Beeren, who in 1971 charted the innovative Buiten de Perken course for Sonsbeek.
Seventy-five artists were represented in the exhibition. In the Eusebius Church, female artists attracted particular attention: the American Beverly Semmes presented a huge bright pink dress in the center of the church, Jessica Diamond created a large mural, and Bruna Esposito from Italy showed a mosaic-like work partly composed of seeds.
One of the boldest choices was the Kronenburg shopping center, a space normally not associated with art. The exhibition allowed this public space to be experienced in a new way, highlighting the vulnerability of art in public settings: several works were damaged, some even multiple times.
Sonsbeek 9: Locus Focus offered a unique demonstration of how art can function in the city, respond to its surroundings, and engage visitors in interaction within public space. It was a clear, accessible, yet challenging edition that placed the dialogue between art, location, and audience at its center.
