Cráter Invertido and Motel Spatie, Kampvuur , 2016

Mexican and Arnhem artist collective Cráter Invertido and Motel Spatie - both organisations pursuing social impact - literally put Arnhem in flames. In the neighborhood Presikhaaf at Motel Spatie, where Cráter Invertido stayed for a month as part of an artist in residence programme, they gave away packages with which you can make your own campfire. This 'campfire package' included wood, matches, and a manifesto. Cráter Invertido also organised storytelling workshops, because campfires require storytelling.

Create a campfire together with other, listen to each other's stories, and share your own story. A campfire is a place to meet, wherever you are. Making a fire is a universal act, symbolising rituals, organising, participating, communication, and tradition.

Cráter Invertido and Motel Spatie wanted to draw line beneath Arnhem's ideas about fire, namely that it's fatal, burning, anarchist rebillion, and reintroduce it in city life. Fire and smoke are not always dangerous. Smoke signals are among the oldest means of communication. However, this primitive way of communication has been replaced by buildings, billboards, and airplanes. Let's go back to basics, share legends, and welcome the summer together.
