Ishwanto Hartono, Feldküche [Mellow] #2, 2016

Next to the John Frost bridge, the iconic bridge from World War II (A Bridge too far), life-sized figures were on display. Historical figures, combined with imaginary figures from Ishwanto Hartono's childhood memories. Hartono is an artitect and artist from Java. He intertwined fiction and reality. What does it feel like for people from Arnhem to see German soldiers from World War II next to pop idols such as Madonna, Ghandi, and Charlie Chaplin? When they are depicted as regular people standing in a kitchen?
This work is connected to the previous works Feldkuche (Dusseldorf, 2009) and Flower (Tokyo, 2008). These works are characteristic of Iswanto's oeuvre, as he aims to shed light on history to recover neglected stories. Stories revolving recent discussions on international politics, wars, and power, for example. The artist reflects on these stories by using his personal perspective, making his work anything but predictable.
