Jean-Gabriel Périot, Nijuman no Borei (200,000 fantomes / 200,000 phantoms), 2007
Jean-Gabriel Périot is an artist and film maker, who has been creating a unique oeuvre which is both provocative and deeply moving. His films comprise of a mix of existing moving and photograpic images, supported by poignant soundtracks. Périot confronts us with themes related to war and peace, geopolitical issues, and human rights.
Nijuman no Borei (200,000 fantomes / 200,000 phantoms) shows the effects of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. One of the few big buildings surving the atomic attack on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, the Genbaku dome serves as a metaphor to remember. A series of archival photos, focused on this dome, are the point of departure for the film. Shot between 1914-2006, the photos reflect the daily life of people living in the city. 'In this day and age, this disaster should give us the strength to deal with everything that is being destroyed by our present world.' This work was exhibited during the group exhibition TransHISTORY at Museum Arnhem, part of SONSBEEK '16.
