Juul Sadée, 'SO', 2016
Artist Juul Sadée collected objects, stories, thoughts, and memories which bear a connection to the Moluccan community in The Netherlands. After three years of collecting, she ranked everything to create a 'story-installtion', titled 'SO', which was on view at Museum Bronbeek.
'SO' shed light on a neglected part of Dutch colonial history: the Moluccan story. This story is about 12.000 Moluccan people, who arrived in boats 65 years ago, and struggled to familiarise themselves with Dutch culture, similarly to refugees right now. Living in a camp, without work, and little social security. How does this effect one's identity and self-image?
For SONSBEEK '16, Juul organised a series of meeting with second generation Moluccan women and several men from Arnhem and the surrouding area. The stories of their parents were told most often, and Moluccan women keep to themselves. What's it like to be a child of a soldier? To what extent is is possible to be emancipated? Answers to questions such as these are incorporated in 'SO'.
