Mark Salvatus, Claws, 2016

At park Coehoorn and Café Strella, Arnhem cats were allowed to scratch their nails on the artwork of Mark Salvatus during SONSBEEK '16. In fact, the work was created especially for them. During his research in Arnhem, Mark was struck by an international cats congress. Memories took hold of him. His mother used to tie books to table legs, so that cats were able to scratch them. Mark looked for books, and furniture at markets and thrift shops in Arnhem. By using these discarded objects, he created a personal artwork: a playground for cats and their owners.

Books sharpen the nails of cats, similarly to sharpening the minds of readers. Mark considers books as an influential means to share or destroy ideas. Books symbolise human's evolution. 'But we tend to forget the city also belongs to animals, not just people', according to Mark. He lives in two big cities: Manilla and Osaka. Just like Claws his other works emanate from unplanned encounters, and everyday life.
