Otobong Nkanga, In Pursuit of Bling, 2014

In Pursuit of Bling consists of a double-sided tapestry and tables with floating minerals. Some table include a monitor showing video images. This installation is about the appeal of everything that shines, and what people will do to get a hold of 'bling bling'; exhausting the earth. How do the decisions of individuals influence communities, how does the chain of cause and effect ufold?
Otobong Nkanga, born in Nigeria, investigates the relation between cultural values and people's relationships with natural resources and use of the land. She always uses different stones in her work. In Nkanga's eyes, stones are carriers of memory, and the connection between the earth and human intervention. They represent borders, relics, a means to defend oneself, a means to destroy, souvenirs, equipment, and they point to the exhaustion of natural resources and minerals.
This work was part of the group exhibition TransHistory at Museum Arnhem, which was part of SONSBEEK '16. Afterwards, the work was acquired by Museum Arnhem.
