Rossella Biscotti, yow-wow-wow-wow, 2016
Is this artwork meant for humans or animals? Or both? Far away from human activity and crowded places in the park, an imaginative animal-epic was created with lose brick walls, footprints of animals, vegetables, and toys. The main characters are a fox, rhino, a lioness, a bat, a very old female elephant, as well as invisible wolves...
Borders disappeared on this spot. Borders between the rural area and the wildernis. Between human and animal. Biscotti merged elements of three local, man-made locations: elements from the city Arnhem, park Sonsbeek, and the royal Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem. She was inspired by local fairy tales, such as Reynaert de Vosa satirical epic from the thirteenth century. Another source of inspiration was the eighteenth century-story about an Indian rhino of a Dutch caption, which travelled across Europese for seventeen years.
For SONSBEEK '16, Rosella told a story about the history, current time, and future of Arnhem. By using brick, which were produced in Arnhem and shipped to Batavia (Jakarta) during colonial times, and by included a mix of different animals.
