Theme

With artworks from ten different European countries - a staggering 337 works in total - Sonsbeek ’58 again shows an overview of European sculpture. This time, a,gain the focus is on French sculpture, which is still considered the starting point of innovation at the time. Yet this edition pays more attention to recent developments in other European countries. Thanks to eighty sculptures by Italian artists, for example, visitors get an idea of developments in the field of sculpture in Italy. Compared to previous editions, there are also more work by German artists on display this time. At the same time, a greater discrepancy seems to emerge between the works of long-dead artists such as Honoré Daumier (died 1879) and Auguste Rodin (died 1917) and innovative works by young artists such as Andre Volten (born 1925).
