Sonsbeek 2001/Sonsbeek 9: Locus Focus

2 July – 29 Augustus 2001

Curator

Jan Hoet (1936-2014)

Theme

Like his predecessors, Belgian curator Jan Hoet looks at past Sonsbeek editions. SonsbeekIn his introduction for the catalog, he emphasizes the importance of continuity and tradition. While predecessors Wim Beeren and Valery Smith opt for a spread of artworks, Hoet decides to limit himself to three places with different functions. Hence the subtitle 'LocusFocus'. The choice falls on the for Arnhem characteristic park Sonsbeek (the cultural), the Eusebius Church (the historical) and the shopping center Kronenburg (the socio-economic). Hoet writes in his introduction, "[I have] very deliberately wanted to keep this Sonsbeek exhibition clear, surveyable and above all readable - a tangible exhibition too, which everyone, if not understanding, can at least read . . . . . "

During
Sonsbeek 9 seventy five artists present their varied works. The Eusebius Church features a number of striking works by female artists. For example, in the middle of the church is an enormous bright pink dress by American artist Beverly Semmes. Shopping center Kronenburg on the outskirts of Arnhem is perhaps the most daring location. Thanks to the artworks, the shopping center was experienced differently. In turn, the art proves vulnerable: a number of artworks are destroyed, sometimes even several times. Eventually Sonsbeek 9: LocusFocus shed light on the relationships between art and public space in Arnhem in its own unique way.
