Folkert de Jong, You're afraid to dive into the plasma pool, aren't you? You're afraid to be destroyed and recreated?, 2016

At the crossing leading to the white villa, the Steile Tuin and the hertenkamp, one could come across a blue man. The sculpture underwent a transformation. He appeared to be preserved, and immortal. He looked large and solid. But the bigger something gets, the more fragile it becomes. The works was slowly growing, becoming deformed and monster-looking.
Scientist Seth Brundle suffered the same fate in The Fly (1896), a science-fiction, horror movie from director David Cronenberg, a source of inspiration for Folkert. After being teleported from his self-made 'telepod', Seth slowly changes into half fly, half human. To his loved ones, who are concerned about his monstrous transformation, he says: You’re afraid to be destroyed and recreated.
Folkert lives and works in Amsterdam, and is known for his use of high-tech materials. He, for example, likes to use plastics and styrofoam. For SONSBEEK '16, he experimented with hydrospan, a material which can expand up to sixty percept when it comes into contact with water.
